In California, smoking marijuana is known as being “California sober.” In Georgia, it’s grounds for a police investigation that puts multiple people in handcuffs and ends up being part of an organized crime indictment five years later.
That’s what’s happening in the Young Thug / YSL trial in Atlanta, where some of the overt acts for the racketeering conspiracy charge involve marijuana that prosecutors say was possessed and/or sold to further the notoriety of the Young Slime Life criminal street gang. This clip is from testimony about a marijuana investigation that led to Young Thug’s co-defendant Quamarvious Nichols being arrested for felon in possession of a firearm. The incident occurred on Oct. 23, 2018. Police saw an Instagram video and spotted Nichols with marijuana, and they went to the apartment where he was at to try to locate the marijuana. A police K-9 joined the search.
Nichols ended up being arrested for possessing a gun, which is overt act 77.
On Dec. 4, 2023, Nichols’ lawyer Nicole Westmoreland, who works with Bruce Harvey, cross-examined Sgt. Charles Ross of the Atlanta Police Department about the investigation and arrest. Her tone conveys her point: This was a huge overreaction by police. But this is also Red State Georgia.

Westmorland has been a licensed lawyer in Georgia since June 2018 after earning her law degree from Stetson University. She’s worked with Harvey on other trials, and she seems quite comfortable at the lectern and with her own style. Like Young Thug’s lawyer Brian Steel, she says something immediately after the witness answers (usually “okay”) in a tone that conveys her thoughts on the testimony and helps keep the tone flowing her way.
