One great thing about the Young Thug / YSL trial is that the defense lawyering is very good, so good that much of it could be used in law school curriculum and Continuing Legal Education trial advocacy classes.

The overall problem with the trial is that prosecutors manage the case like a bunch of small trials about the overt acts instead of a larger trial about a RICO conspiracy. But that also means we get examinations that can be very useful for other criminal defense lawyers and law students interested in criminal defense.

The truth is most attorneys who want to practice criminal law aren’t going to be defending people charged with RICO. They’re going to be defending people charged in state court with theft, robbery, drug possessions and carjackings. And the YSL defense lawyers’ examinations of the overt act witnesses exemplify some of the best practices for criminal defense attorneys working those cases.

I am going to make a playlist just for Keith Adams’ crosses. (You can watch another cross by him here: He represents Young Thug with Brian Steel, and he’s been a licensed lawyer in Georgia since 1993 after earning his law degree from Tulane University in New Orleans.

In this video, Adams cross-examines an assistant manager with the Georgia crime lab about tests conducted or not conducted, on drugs found in a Mercedes Benz Maybach Thug and Gunna were stopped in with Cedric Jones in September 2017. (You can watch the lab manager’s direct-exam here:

One thing Adams has obviously mastered is the art of not rushing it. At this point in his career, he has probably done this kind of cross so many times, but he knows it’s all new to the jury, so he needs to take it slow and make it really sink in. His point in this exam is the same point he made in his crosses of the cops: No one tested the stuff in the Maybach for fingerprints.

00:58 The lab can test items for biological substances like sweat, saliva.

01:55 Did the cops go to another portion of the lab before her’s? She doesn’t think so

03:25 You don’t know anything about Cedric Jones or Jeffery Williams’ involvement

04:51 “Codeine does have pain-relieving properties.”

06:00 Xanax: “Again, a legal substance, but it has to be prescribed.”

07:33 Prosecutor up for re-direct, and the questions are waste-of-time stupid.

08:23 “Tell the jury – what does it mean for a substance to be a controlled substance.”

10:07 “Is it legal to have codeine in and of itself?” “I can’t speak to the legality of different substances.” Surprising that there was no defense objection before she answered, but at this point, who cares?

10:41 Is it normal to have prescription codeine in Sprite bottles?

11:10 Adams up for re-cross

11:25 “Law enforcement officers know where to send stuff if they want it analyzed?”
