It’s #NationalPetDay… So let’s talk about the accuracy of K9 officers!

There are many studies that suggest cops may intentionally or unintentionally lead their dogs during drug sniffs. What are the consequences of this happening? Well, according to a Chicago Tribune study, the accuracy rate of a sniffer dog drops to just 27% if the car is owned by a Hispanic person. Could this mean the handler was profiling the driver and leading their dog? Perhaps. This is a huge drop from the already low 44% accuracy rate across all races.

Always say NO to a drug dog sniffing your car. Most times, officers will ask if you can wait on one to come and it’s within your rights to say no to waiting.

  1. Clever Hans, a performing horse in Berlin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries celebrated for demonstrating remarkable intelligence. The feats performed by the horse were eventually explained as simple behavioral responses to subtle cues provided (perhaps unintentionally) by his handler.

  2. How are dogs legal at all? I can't cross-examine the dog, which should make it a sixth amendment violation.

  3. The dogs are really only there to give cops cause to search. The dog can do anything and the cop say it "alerted". It's just to support revenue.

  4. What happens? No drugs are found but your new car is all scratched up by the dog who pays for the damages?????

  5. The consequences are that false positives by dogs create credibility problems with DAs and courts. Handlers would be in trouble with their bosses with that kind of performance rate. What official withs accept that as probable cause.
And I'm shocked this lawyer doesn't know what profiling is. You can't tell what race a driver is until the car is stopped. Then what articulable grounds are there to wait around for the dog? If they are willing to influence the dog, with such a failure rate, why not just say they smelled marijuana, and skip a step!
    This allegation is so silly.

  6. Dogs allowing a search of your car without a warrant or probable cause despite overall having less than 50% success would be outlawed in a sensible society.

  7. How is the dog inside of the car? If I'm ordered out of my vehicle the windows are getting rolled up and the doors will be locked.

  8. As a tow truck operator working with cops always film the dog if the dogs mouth is open and "hits" it was the handerler and dogs cant sniff if thier mouth is open

  9. Average of 44% means if the cops just flipped a coin instead of running a dog, you'd have a better chance of not being searched.

  10. These K9 dogs alert when the K9 handler TELLS them to , whenever they want to search someone's vehicle .This is still a violation of our rights , the fourth amendment to be specific .
