It is insane to me just how much power we've entrusted in our peace officers when we know this power is abused daily by countless officers across the nation. It only takes a few to spoil the many, whether violating the rights of the citizens they serve or abusing the citizens they serve or flat out lying about what they seen, heard or can smell in order to create probable cause needed to justify the stop, they need to be held accountable. Their job as public servants is to maintain peace and uphold and defend our rights not fabricating evidence to be used against citizens for generating revenue. These bad officers hide behind qualified immunity and are almost always protected by their superiors as well as prosecutors and judges who also are protected by immunity. They are all protected and face little consequences for their actions when they abuse the citizens they serve regardless of if their abuse is intentional or by ignorance. It is only the citizens who are not protected by any kind of immunity because the citizen is held to even higher standards than those who "serve" the citizen, when public servants violate your rights immunity protects them, when a citizen violates a law regardless of knowing or not the citizen gets no immunity, the citizen gets a citation and is fined and possibly jailed.
The divide between public servants like law enforcement and the citizens they serve will never be bridged as long as those who serve are not held to at least the same standards as those they serve. Throughout the history of our society we have collectively believed in a lead by example however this is not the case for public servants…they are often above those they serve
