NYPD captain charged in N.J. with kidnapping, assaulting woman; case carries possible 15-to-30 year sentence
An NYPD captain who commanded a Brooklyn police precinct has been charged with assaulting a woman in New Jersey by smashing her head into the dashboard of his car, prosecutors said Thursday.
Capt. Hariton Marachilian faces counts of kidnapping, assault, criminal restraint and criminal coercion in the Dec. 10, 2022 incident in Paterson, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. The most serious charge in the criminal complaint, first-degree kidnapping, under New Jersey law carries a possible penalty of 15 to 30 years in prison.
The victim — a woman with whom Marachilian had allegedly been “having an affair” — got into an argument with the NYPD officer in his vehicle after they left a restaurant in Paterson, according to court documents.
Marachilian slammed the woman’s head into the car’s dashboard, the documents said. She escaped from the vehicle — but Marachilian chased her down, picked her up over his head and slammed her to the ground, the documents said.
The NYPD officer then allegedly dragged her back to the vehicle, drove to another location and repeatedly punched her.
The captain allegedly took the woman’s phone, but the documents said a witness called police after the woman “begged” for help. The documents said the victim’s injuries included swelling to the nose and face, cuts to her eye and leg and foot bruises.
Marachilian told Paterson cops he and the woman were having an affair, the documents said, with the woman telling police that she and Marachilian were friends. Prosecutors say Marachilian, described as having a history of “stalking, harassment and terroristic threats,” will be held in custody pending his next court date.
