Indonesia has passed a controversial new Criminal Code that includes outlawing sex outside marriage and cohabitation, in changes that critics contend could undermine freedoms in the Southeast Asian nation.
The new laws apply to Indonesians and foreigners and also restore a ban on insulting the president, state institutions or Indonesia’s national ideology known as Pancasila.
The new criminal code, which was approved unanimously by parliament on Tuesday, replaces a framework that had been in use since independence in 1946 and was a mix of Dutch law, customary law known as hukum adat, and modern Indonesian law.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reports.

  1. Good job, Indonesia. Your country, your laws. European creatures should mind their own business.

  2. I'm interested to see how this is going to turn out 5 years from now.
It's going to lead to a massive decline in childbirths, marriage, and also tourism.
I will never visit that country for fear of false accusations and jail time.

  3. I won't visit islamic countries, not just Indonesia. Islamic religion has the most restrictions on human rights….other words….take away your freedoms.

  4. Great video, I was in a beautiful marriage before my now ex wife left me,i still love her and most times i can't stop thinking about her, i am doing my very best to get rid of the thought of her, but i just can't, i love her so much, i don't know what i am bring this here for, i can't stop thinking about her

  5. I thought serving god was a matter of choice..so if you comply due to being forced,.. Do you still qualify for the heavenly trip? so this means that no other people of different religions are catered for..So how then do you argue to protect the Muslim faith against prejudicial treatment from others??? Are we really in 2022? I do not see this panning out! More corruption/rebellion will occur as a result! Let's keep watch!

  6. It is better for Bali and Eastern Indonesia to leave the republic. The conservative minds of Jakarta does not fit anymore with the eastern part of Indonesia. Leave the Republic and turn Indonesia into a Federation. It is a shame to be Indonesian with these shady laws.

  7. Sanction Indonesian regime. The goal is to suppress individuals' freedom. Do not visit Indonesia. No tourism.

  8. Islamist syariah laws had creeped into daily lives in Indonesia. All tourists can by-pass this country and look for other asian countries to visit.

  9. YOU WILL BE PUNISHED WHEN YOUR COUPLE/PARENTS/CHILDREN REPORTS IT! please pay attention to the laws,, there are many advantages of this rule too, each couple will not dare to cheat on their partner, lower the birth rate in teenage children, etc. You don't live in Indonesia, you don't know nothing.

  10. This is what happens when you have people believing an ancient book of nonsense. Spring Break 2023 Jakarta everyone! fart sound

  11. I see a lot of blackmail and extortion when this law goes into effect. as well as teen pregnancy, where teenagers end up in jail and the child is born in jail because of the lack of sexual education. This is going to be a disaster, especially with foreign tourists that go to Bali, they're creating an international scandal.

  12. Well done Indonesia in proving again that Islam is incompatible with the modern world, science and humanity.

  13. Mohammad raped a prepubertal child while this law outlaws even educating anyone under 18 about about birth control. Well done Indonesia in proving again that Islam is incompatible with the modern world, science and humanity.

  14. This comment section shows the absolute hypocrisy that channels like Al Jazeera and it's audience portray where they point fingers at easy targets while defending literal abuse of basic human rights in islamic societies.
