Indonesia’s controversial new Criminal Code was passed into law on Tuesday 6 December, 2022. While there is no doubt that Indonesia needs a new and up to date criminal law, this legislation is seen by many as deeply flawed and threatening a range of human rights and freedoms, particularly of religious and sexual minorities, and those critical of the government.
Our expert panel of Australian and Indonesian lawyers, activists and scholars analysed the problems the new Code creates and assessed what might be done to challenge it. The conference explored aspects of the RUU KUHP including human rights, sexuality, freedom of expression, ‘living law’, gender, blasphemy, and sentencing.
This online conference was hosted by the Indonesia Democracy Hallmark Research Initiative (IDeHaRI), together with the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society, Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne.
