22. What’s always been confusing about the death penalty in the US is that the vast majority of those supporting it also follow Jesus. Yet Jesus was quite explicit about stuff like this: “You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” (Matthew 5:38-39)

    Personally, I’m against the death penalty for one main reason: risk involved in executing innocent people. If I were on a jury where the possibility of the death penalty were involved, I’d be mighty reluctant to convict as there could always be the possibility of a mistake. 12 Angry Men is essential viewing here.

28. In case people are wondering, Michigan did abolish the death penalty except in cases of treason in 1847 (not 1846). That was corrected in 1962. Wisconsin was the first state to abolish the death penalty for all crimes, including treason, in 1853. Maine abolished the death penalty in 1887.
