Santo Trafficante Jr. a prominent figure in organized crime, led the Florida Mafia with a shrewd and secretive demeanor during the mid-20th century. Born on November 15, 1914, in Tampa, Florida, Santo Trafficante Jr. inherited his father’s criminal empire, solidifying his place in the underworld. His involvement in bootlegging during Prohibition laid the groundwork for his rise to power in the Florida Mafia.
As the head of the Trafficante crime family, Santo Jr. extended his reach into illegal gambling, narcotics trafficking, and labor racketeering. He forged connections with powerful crime syndicates, solidifying his position as a key player in organized crime.
Trafficante’s ties to the Havana allowed him to control lucrative casino operations in Cuba during the 1950s. He became a trusted ally of Cuban leader Fidel Castro before their relationship deteriorated after Castro’s rise to power.
Despite suspicions of involvement in numerous criminal activities, Santo Trafficante Jr. managed to evade significant convictions. He was called to testify during the investigations into the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
