  1. Honestly, loneliness is not too negative aspect. I think it's a great chance to start something new or fun. When I am used to being lone, and I can do lots of activities or hobbies which I like😅😅😅

  2. Great concept! Alas, my mom doesn't like the British accent… are there any channels like this for American English?

  3. Summary
Loneliness -> affects anyone even in town and city (even when with close ones) -> modern epidemic -> serious effects -> put greater risks of health issues: dementia and heart disease
The Netherlands -> project -> aiming to fight loneliness
Proportion of British adults feel loneliness -> my guess: 49%
Being lonely and Being alone isn't necessarily the same -> can even feel lonely even when there are people around you
Loneliness -> craves for people company or much contact with others, feels estranged (left out) and have no one to turn to when in need, develops depression, dementia and cardiovascular diseases -> crave for connections with others
Beth -> found death at her home 2013 -> been death for 10 years, lost contact with her only child, kept to herself in her apartment
A project in Netherlands Oma Soup (Grandma in Dutch) by Max and Martin -> concern their grandparents generation would become isolated -> student friends have lots of free time -> bring grandparents and students and school children together to make soup -> make them get use to the things that they have never done before -> feel connected (a campaign to combat loneliness epidemic) and commemorate the lonely death of Beth, make her tragic death a spark for something helpful -> big success
    Guess correct!

  4. Thanks bbc! Thanks to you, I have successfully improved my listening skills and vocabulary, respectively. This has helped me to pass my IELTS tests with flying colours!

  5. In my opinion, one of the best way to bring people together is to encourage them to engage in any community activities. I feel grateful for having a chance to listen to your podcast weekly.

  6. In the materialistic world loneliness is not confined to and affecting people of one particular nation it has now sadly crept to and become global phenomenon..

  7. I used to be lonely even when my family was by my side. It was such a miserable habit. Loneliness isolated me from the real world, not the people around me. Everything was abnormal for me. So I took up listening to the English podcasts on mental issues improving my English. It did me good! Now, I can boost up my mental health, thanks to BBC Learning English. 🤸

  8. He had strove to connect and talk to the others but ultimately he was still left out and had no one to turn to in his tough times.

  9. I craved to join the chess club because I had free time, but they didn't let me enter. I felt left out, so I turned to a guy I knew who was a friend of the chess club teacher. The teacher and I played a game, and he realized that I was good and let me join the club. Ultimately, the teacher brought our community members together, even though we usually do things alone.

  10. Thank you for this special podcast. In fact, Chinese people like making soup and a gourmet meal with wholesome soup can surely bring people together. 🎉😊

  11. I feel absolutely comfortable with myself 🙂 I don’t feel left out or anything. But in my opinion, it’s a good idea to bring older generations with young people together. Especially, if older ones don’t have any children or relatives to turn to them for help or just for communication. Besides, younger guys can find useful to talk with older people to get some life experience from them. 😊

  12. Since pandemic time, it has been a concern that several people feel down due to emotional disconnection, It is a reality in our society that it could lead to depression and other mental conditions. Thanks, BBC for avoiding elephant in the rooms.
