WHO CAN BE CHARGED WITH EXTORTION IN COLORADO?

Colorado 18.3.207 CRS makes it a crime to extort somebody. Extortion in Colorado, commonly referred to as blackmail, is trying to get someone to do, or not do, something against their will by making a threat.

The maximum penalty for extortion in Colorado is 6 years in state prison. But if you use, threaten to use, or simply possess a deadly weapon, or if someone who is not an accomplice to the crime is killed or serious injured, then a prison sentence is mandatory and can be as long as 16 years.

There are a lot of defenses to extortion in Colorado. The main one is that there may have been a threat, but there was no demand made in conjunction with the threat.
