25. Any who remember the old TYT (you know just over a year ago) will be a little disoriented by this ‘tough on crime’ TYT champions. Two things to note:
    1) As of Dec 2023 the US has the highest number of incarcerated individuals in the world (followed by that soft on crime country: China).
    2) Crime (in general) has been trending downwards in the US since the end of the pandemic.

    If indeed an officer is in fact claiming that arrests and prosecutions are futile, then that certainly warrants serious critique. However, the history of such allegations being gross misrepresentations warrants skepticism.

    The further right-wing gambit is to repeat the fallacy of excluding the middle, claiming that anything other than harsh treatment is futile.

    In fact, we can — and by extensive evidence, ought to — apply both penal and socially constructive strategies.

    Very plainly, the ‘corrections’ system in the USA is just the opposite: really a finishing school for a criminal career! The results achieved in Scandinavia by taking seriously the commitment to helping people become to integrate with society are in comparison dramatically better.

    That’s in a context of more commitment to making society itself less dysfunctional, so the causes of criminality in the first place arise less frequently.
