As we peruse through the introduction to the course as we did in my last lecture, it is pertinent to understand what a crime or an offence is (it should be noted that both can be used interchangeably).
Typically, an offense must have at least three elements or criteria present
1. it must be an act or omission
2. it must be written in a law
3. it must have its punishment attached to it
